Mars Hopes Deflated! |
Minneapolis, MN - After turning in an excellent qualifying lap that put him in the twelfth position on the starting grid, Jimmy Mars saw his hopes of an ASA top 10 finish deflate on lap 75 along with his left rear tire. This year's Miller Lite 300 featured the best line up of talent ever assembled for the Minnesota State Fair race. This included Nascar regulars Kenny Wallace, Ted Musgrave, Tony Raines, Ted Smokstad and Scott Hansen. Mars has been very strong in his first three ASA starts, but has not been able to put together a finish that shows the team's strengths. In the first three outings, the ParkerStores team has had to deal with master cylinder, drive shaft and tire problems. The young driver has been able to work his way in to the top ten at each event, showing that he has the ability to run with the best drivers the series has to offer. "We had a really competitive car and should have had a top ten finish," said Jimmy. "I could feel the tire going down for 4 or 5 laps, but we were hoping to get a caution flag. It's one of those things that you just never know. I could have stopped on the track to cause a yellow, but then we would have lost a lap or two anyway. The crew did a great job, and we even had a couple of under 10 second pit-stops. That's pretty good for a bunch of new guys. The only thing missing from this ParkerStore team now, is a little good luck." Despite the Mars brothers bad luck, LaFavre Racing Teams teammate Mike Garvey was able to grab the lead with less than ten laps left and go on for the win. This is undoubtedly one of the biggest wins of his career. "It's just awesome to win in our own back yard. The team worked so hard today and never gave up," said Mike Garvey. The ParkerStores/Emerald First Financial Team was able to come back and finish 19th. "We had an awesome car and we could have stayed on the lead lap all day," said crew chief Chris Mars. "We're learning every time we go out. Next year we should be in contention to win some races. We're really happy with how things are going. We had some great pit-stops, the entire crew was pumped-up more each time." (John Strand-September 7, 1999) (Photo by John Bessinger) |
