Championship Hopes Deflate

schatz-aus010pc.jpg (16194 bytes)(BRISBANE, QLD, January 12, 2000) WSS points leader Brooke Tatnell won yet another round, his fifth of the 17-round Series, at Brisbane's Archerfield Speedway to all but wrap up a third crown ahead of World of Outlaws rival Donny Schatz. The pair had contrasting fortunes in the 30-lap A-Feature in which Tatnell fended off a trio of Americans in Goodyear Eagle Dash victor Phil Gressman and the Californian Kaedings- son Tim ahead of father Brent.

The younger Kaeding started the night by capturing quick time in his EWT machine but admitted, "I don't know how we did that, and it is the best I've qualified, as I woke up feeling really sick this morning!" Kaeding topped preliminary qualifying and drew the dreaded six inversion of the Dash in which Gressman kept his BC Motorsports Gambler ahead of Tatnell for the six-lap duration.

The feature began with the front row occupants running one-two until just one lap was completed before a four-car melee in Turn One brought about a caution light. The incident eliminated defending champion Skip Jackson (Pennzoil-Skilled Jackson) and Queensland champion Todd Wanless (131 Stealth) with flat left rear and right front tires respectively.

From the restart Gressman continued to lead until lap eight at which time the Clyde, Ohio driver admitted, "I had moved the wing back a little bit but it was already too late as Brooke showed me a line I didn't think was there." Once into the lead, passing Gressman around the outside in Turn Four, the Shell Helix Avenger continued to extend its advantage. Brooke was further heartened to see archrival Schatz on the infield after a bleeder valve malfunctioned and the right rear tire on his Bunbury Toyota-Parker Stores Maxim deflated.

"I found it hard to keep my mind on the job when I saw Donny sitting on the infield," said Tatnell, "I kept trying to see how many other cars had dropped out before him! I'd tried to blow off the top during the heat races but was a little worried at the start that the bottom would have more drive. Once the track dried out I had to stay up the top."

While Tatnell slowly cleared away from his rivals, a three-way dice eventuated between the US trio as the two Kaedings exerted greater pressure upon Gressman. The latter prevailed, saying, "Right in the center of the corner the car was a little loose but the way we went I feel like a win in one of these WSS rounds isn't too far away." Brent closed upon his son, claiming, "I loosened the car up just before the start and it was my call. When I got upstairs we ran harder and I'm not displeased. I was just hoping to get up and race with Tim."

An excellent fifth was Toowoomba youngster Cameron Gessner who's Union Steel Maxim he described as, "Being about 70 horsepower down on the top motors out there. The cylinder heads are older and I can't rev it because I have to look after it." Sixth went to Max Dumesny's Valvoline J&J after 12th-starting Kerry Madsen was relegated one position by WSS officials for having allegedly passed Danny Smith via the infield.

Dumesny admitted, "We set up the car a little bit differently from normal and it felt quite good but then went too loose as the track dried out." Madsen said, "We couldn't pass anyone in the heats in our Motor Up Grizzly ,so we experimented in the feature. Once the track dried we were okay, and it was a shame there were no more yellows for us."

Rounding out the top 10 was Toowoomba's Andrew Scheuerle (Lucas Oils Maxim), Indiana's Smith (Castrol Eagle) and yet another Queenslander, Nathan MacDonald in his self constructed Fraser Shores-RAAF AIS Mac 1.

The penultimate round of the Series returns to Archerfield for the two-night Australian Sprintcar Open on Fri-Sat (Jan 14-15) followed by the Series Grand Final at Sydney's Parramatta City Raceway on Sat January 22.
