New Richmond, WI - On the first warm and sunny Saturday of the spring, the fans were greeted at the Cedar Lake Speedway with an unbelievable car count of 159 automobiles in the pit area. A whopping 56 Super Stocks topped all divisions with 42 Modifieds, 36 Late Models and 25 Street Stocks comprising the remainder of the competitors in attendance.

Jimmy Mars decided to spend this past weekend hanging out with the family. The only problem was that if his mom and wife wanted to see him, they better check out the raceshop, or make a trip to an area track. Mars and the ParkerStore team were on hand for Saturday night’ action.

mars-cedarwin002.jpg (14954 bytes)The mighty Late Models were the final event on the card and the race did not get off to a very good start as a huge crash on the first lap left several cars badly torn up. Brent Larson, Brady Smith and Owen Grube's nights were over in a hurry after the pileup on the backstretch. Once the wreckage was cleared up, Lance Matthees dove under pole-sitter Jimmy Mars into the lead on the first lap and very quickly opened up a straightaway advantage on Mars, who was busy dealing with Keith Foss for second. The best battle of the speedway was for third as Mike Goodremote and Ashley Anderson reeled in Foss and began to work him over for the position.

Goodremote stole spot and set off after Mars while Anderson snuck by Foss into fourth on the next circuit. Matthees and Mars were gone as Pat Doar worked the high line to steal fifth from Foss on lap 10 as Anderson and Goodremote rekindled their battle for third as well. Steve Laursen was moving up quickly on the low side as he joined the battle for third with Goodremote and Anderson while an awesome scramble was ongoing just out of the top five. Foss, Doar, Rob Halstead, W C Field and Mike Chamernick were all locked in tight with each other as both the high and low grooves were fast at times.

Matthees began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 18, which allowed Mars to cut into his advantage with each circuit. Before long, Mars had caught Matthees and bolted to the outside of Lance for the lead with only several laps remaining. The duo went wheel to wheel for a few laps until Mars was able to pull out to a three-car length advantage as the white flag flew.

Mars held the spot for his second win at Cedar Lake this season as Matthees came home second. Laursen edged Anderson at the line for third and Goodremote nipped Doar for fifth.
