Eighteen cars took the green flag for the WISSOTA Late Model main event with Tony Bahr getting the jump off the pole position. From the outside, Mars raced with Bahr as they went down the back chute for the first time. Bahr carried his car very deep into turn three and banged off the concrete wall. Bahr was able to get back on the gas and maintained the lead but Mars had to check up and Mike Goodremote ducked by on the inside to take second at the completion of the first lap. Mars got back on the gas and pulled in to challenge Goodremote for second. Behind them John Kaanta, Duane Mahder and Joel Cryderman were battling for position.
Mars was on the move and he quickly reeled in Bahr to race for the lead. Mars continued to work the high side and on lap seven he took over. Once in front he began to extend his advantage and no one was able to stay with him. Bahr continued to run alone in second while Goodremote, Kaanta and Mahder ran in tight formation. As Mars continued to pull away, the three cars racing for third began to close in on second running Bahr. Kaanta started to fade a bit and both Mahder and Cryderman were able to drive past him. Goodremote closed in on Bahr but he also had both Mahder and Cryderman to deal with.
But up front there was no doubt who was in charge. Mars opened up a straightaway advantage on his way to the first Red Cedar victory this season. Mars became the eighth different Late Model winner here this season. (Reprinted with the permission of Ed Reichert and www.allthedirt.com) (Photos by Mike Holzhueter) |
